Preparing your manuscript for submission to The Antiquarian Journal. Follow these guidelines to ensure your work meets our scholarly standards.

Double-blind peer review process

Scope & Aims

The Antiquarian Journal publishes original scholarly research on historical literature, philosophy, art history, manuscript studies, and related fields from antiquity through the early modern period. We welcome interdisciplinary approaches that bridge traditional disciplinary boundaries.

We Publish

  • Original research articles (5,000-10,000 words)
  • Scholarly reviews of recent publications
  • Critical editions of historical texts
  • Methodological and historiographical essays

We Do Not Publish

  • Previously published material
  • Unsubstantiated speculative works
  • Creative fiction or poetry
  • Works outside our historical scope

Manuscript Formatting

Basic Requirements

  • MS Word (.docx) or LaTeX (.tex) format
  • 12-point Times New Roman or Garamond
  • Double line spacing throughout
  • 1-inch margins on all sides
  • Page numbers in bottom center
  • No author identification in manuscript

Structure

  • Title: Clear, descriptive, under 15 words
  • Abstract: 150-250 words, standalone
  • Keywords: 5-7 relevant terms
  • Main text: Clear sections with headings
  • References: Chicago Manual of Style (17th)
  • Appendices: If necessary, after references

Special Elements

  • Figures & Tables: High-resolution, numbered
  • Images: 300+ DPI, proper permissions
  • Foreign Text: Transliteration/translation
  • Quotations: Original language + translation
  • Abbreviations: Defined at first use
  • Special Characters: Unicode fonts

Submit through our online submission system. You will need to create an account, complete the submission form, and upload your manuscript file along with a separate cover letter.

Required Uploads:

  • Manuscript: Anonymous version in .docx or .tex format
  • Cover Letter: Include author details, statement of originality, and suggested reviewers
  • Figures/Tables: Separate high-resolution files if applicable
  • Permissions: For any copyrighted material included

Upon successful submission, you will receive an email confirmation with a manuscript ID. You can track your submission's progress through the online system. Initial editorial assessment typically occurs within 1-2 weeks.

Peer Review Process

All submissions undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process. This means that authors' identities are concealed from reviewers, and reviewers' identities are concealed from authors. The process ensures impartial assessment based solely on scholarly merit.

Initial Screening

1-2 weeks. Editors assess fit, originality, and basic compliance.

Peer Review

8-12 weeks. 2-3 experts evaluate scholarly contribution.

Editorial Decision

1-2 weeks. Based on reviewer feedback and editorial assessment.

Possible Decisions

Acceptance

Minor revisions may still be required before publication.

Revision Required

Manuscript requires substantive changes before reconsideration.

Rejection

Manuscript does not meet journal standards for publication.

Revision Timeline

If revisions are requested, authors typically have 60 days to resubmit. Revised manuscripts are usually sent back to the original reviewers for reassessment.
