Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the experiences of supernatural phenomena among rural and urban citizens of Jharkhand, India, integrating quantitative surveys, statistical analyses, and qualitative thematic analysis. Drawing upon existing literature on paranormal beliefs and experiences, the research aimed to fill a significant gap in the scholarly discourse by examining the cultural, social, and psychological factors influencing individuals' encounters with the supernatural within the specific context of Jharkhand. A total of 47 participants (15 males, 32 females) from rural and urban areas completed surveys assessing paranormal beliefs, personality traits, and demographic information. Statistical analyses with the help of Statistical Package of Social Sciences, Version 16, and parametric tests such as independent t-test and Pearson co-relation, revealed correlations between various sub-scales of the Revised Paranormal Belief Scale and personality characteristics as measured by the Short Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, both within urban and rural groups. Thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses identified recurring themes related to paranormal encounters, cultural and religious beliefs, apparitions, sensations of being watched, and visitations from deceased loved ones. Triangulation of findings highlighted both similarities and differences between rural and urban populations in their paranormal beliefs and experiences, suggesting nuanced interactions between cultural contexts, personality traits, and supernatural encounters. The study's implications underscore the importance of considering socio cultural factors in understanding supernatural phenomena and call for further interdisciplinary research to elucidate these complex dynamics.
